Kate the Chocolatier

I had the pleasure of being friends with Kate for 24 years.  Aside from her having the most spontaneous and surprising sense of humor of anyone I know of, there is one thing that I will always remember when I think about her; her special gift as a chocolatier.

The practical wisdom of Forrest Gump has told us that “life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’ll get”.  Well, this did not hold true for Kate.  The first time I saw her demonstrate her strange ability regarding chocolates amazed me.  How could she do this?

Kate picked up a random chocolate, the same in look and feel as all the others.  She dramatically held the chocolate up between her thumb and forefinger beside her head, just out of her line of vision.  She then gave the chocolate a forceful pinch and through clenched teeth said, “What are ya?”  Strawberry cream! She yelled with confidence as she threw down the specimen.  I was amazed.  I immediately picked up the chocolate to find it was in fact strawberry cream.  Do it again! I demanded.  “What are ya?”  Coconut! BAM! Onto the table.  She did it again.  This went on over and over through half a box of chocolates and she was right every time.  Remarkable!

So now I challenge you, go ahead, try to eat a box of chocolates without remembering Kate, I know I can’t.  And, yes I have tried to reproduce her talent myself.  I can only get the caramels right.

Having a mom like mine who never drove a car in her life, a lot of my memories are of driving around. We lived in the car and took bus' everywhere! I couldn't wait for Dad to be home from work on rainy days (he worked in construction)because he would take us shopping and we would go everywhere as a family. Life was really fun with parents like mine. I can't wait to see my mom again.

Aunt Katherine will be missed. I have wonderful memories of Fourth of July fireworks at uncle Mario and aunt Katherine's house such a happy go lucky spirited woman. I pray for comfort for the Priore family.

  1. It's been difficult for me for put words together sufficient enough to express all that I have in my heart, mind, and soul about my sister, for I still can't wrap my head around the fact she has passed beyond this world. Katherine has been a part of my life forever, for she was 19 when I was born. I attended her wedding at the tender age of 4 months, and according to the stories I grew up to hear and repeat, I spent much of my time snoozing away behind the drums at the reception. Images of Kay and Mario from my youth include me standing in front of our dad's TV with the two of them holding me up; visits with Dubarry, Mona, and Fifi, their toy poodles; holding Michelle (and later, Cheri) on the sofa with sisters Geralyn and Carolyn; marveling at the intricate construction work Mario added to their home; Kay's and my legendary lunches when I was a young teenager that were topped off with ice cream sodas made with diet Tab (always calorie-conscious!); and the wonderful way Kay and Mario always seemed to be with each other. I've always enjoyed how they bantered back and forth, the humor (and fire) always present in Kay's eyes, and the feeling of love that charged the atmosphere whenever they were in the room. Later, when we shared Christmas festivities at my mom's in Deep River, I was blessed not only to spend time with Kay, Mario, our brother Marshall, sisters Geralyn and Carolyn (and their respective spouses), but also Cheri and her three sweet girls, and my own children with their families. It is these times, these wonderful memories and so many more that will carry me forth as I attempt to reinvent my life without Kay.

Sweet sister, godmother, and friend, I will miss you! Yet it is a sweet sorrow in my heart, for you are once again with your mom, dad, and those siblings who went before you to pave the way, and know we too will enjoy a reunion in time. Until then, we who are left will remember and cherish your legacy.

I'm in the process in gathering as many old photos as I can find to upload. I hope to have them done by the end of this week, along with the poem I'm still honing in Kay's honor.
